Pie season is upon us, and yet all along here at the Farmacy we've been serving up what we think are the best pies around! Many of you have already experienced the culinary pleasure found in each bite of the pies we serve, and this Sunday, October 24th you can have the pleasure of 'meeting the baker'! Allison Kave of FIRST PRIZE PIES will be at the Brooklyn Farmacy from 3-5PM, meeting, greeting and sampling up yummy spoonfuls of her freshly baked pies and as an added bonus Allison will be taking orders for full pies available for pick up at the Farmacy, just in time for Thanksgiving. Allison's whole pies are highly coveted, so come early place your order! (ordering details at the end of this story)

A Little Back Story (we love a good story)
Allison Kave founded First Prize Pies in March of this year. Her inspiration to start baking professionally came after she took the Best Overall prize in last year's Brooklyn Pie Bake-Off for her Bourbon Ginger Pecan pie. (delicious, and served by the slice at the Farmacy) Allison initially started selling pies by the slice on Saturdays at her mom's shop, Roni-Sue's Chocolates, and as soon as she gave the business a name she was off and running! While Alison has always been passionate about food, and baking in particular, her 'former' career was in the contemporary art world as director of several NYC galleries. Allison received her MA in contemporary art at Sotheby's Institute in London, which perhaps is why her pies not only taste amazing, but the look beautiful as well. After being laid off due to the economic crash of 2008, Alison began to reconsider her career path and decided that she would be happier working with food. She wasn't sure exactly what form that would take, but lucky for all of us, she began to baking pies.

Allison's pie recipes are twists on classics, as well as somewhat quirky or unusual flavor combinations derived from her own sense of nostalgia. She relies on her palate to guide her choices, as well as the taste tests of trusted friends and family. Allison bakes out of her mom's shop, Roni-Sue's Chocolates in the Essex Street Market. So as well as baking, she is able to spend valuable time with her mom on a regular basis. (we're suckers for spending time with moms, so we totally understand) Alison gives credit to her mom as being a huge influence in her approach to food.
     We are thrilled to be serving First Prize Pies as our exclusive pie at the Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain. Please join us in celebrating one of the many local food makers in our area!
